These Paintings ,shown at various stages, are a 5' tall by about 8' wide Triptych painted on wood panels of the cover art from the Lamb Lies Down on Broadway album. I am adding slight hints of color into each of these panels, They are painted using grey tone metallic paints for the most part ..then each has a single color added to the black and white images, one green, one blue and one with a red ochre accent.
The figure that has " climbed out of" the panel on the right will be painted full color with skin tones to add further to the illusion of him being "outside" the painting set against the mostly black and white scenes. He will also have a shadow extending across the center and left side panels to further enhance the 3D appearance of this figure.
There will be around 19 paintings when this series is completed and when seen together will have the look and feel of a comic book story to them . I think its important for painters to do things that are outside of their comfort levels from time to time. It helps us learn and grow as painters as well as widens the demographic of our audience. But most important is it keeps us learning new things about ourselves and our work. I hope there are some out there who are familiar with this great album and the story and lyrics written by Peter Gabriel in his last work with Genesis back in 1975. ....hard to believe it was 40 years ago !
