Overview: Lent is the 40 days before Easter. It's a time when the church has traditionally
encouraged people to reflect on their lives, especially in light of Jesus' sacrifice on the cross:
- Is there anything in our lives we need to change?
- Is there anything in our lives we need to surrender or give up?
- Is there a particular are in our lives we need to experience growth or transformation?
In the same that Lent is a TIME of reflection and surrender, the desert is a PLACE of reflection
and surrender. Over and over again, God's people have gone into this landscape to hear God
and to learn to live in obedience in surrender, from Moses, to the prophets, to John the
Baptist, to Jesus.
The desert is harsh and dry, brutal and barren, and yet it also contains life and beauty. What's
more, the desert is a place of learning, of growth, and most of all, transformation.
If you go into the desert, you don't come out again without being transformed. Changed.
The series will use the parts of the Exodus narrative as “jumping off” points to talk about
“desert spirituality” (loss, change, transformation, etc), with New Testament scriptures.
