Social Seizure is a board game about social domination and collecting momentum to become more and more popular. The game highlights the management of several different profiles as well as managing posts – players need to collect triplets of likes, followers, endorsements etc. in order to post more. To win, you cannot only excel in one social media platform, but you have to dominate across the board. The game provides strategic challenges and players must decide how to micromanage their friends – and sabotage other competitors. The four platforms one must conquer to win are Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn – you must publish three posts to each service to ultimately seize the Internet and end the game of social domination. Stylistically, the game features unique tall-sized cards that are representative of people’s online presence. While there is a clear underlying commentary on social media, this board game does not serve to criticize the effects of social media, but rather mimic the behaviors and game play in a lighthearted way.
The game was created as part of my senior project in the undergraduate Design Media Arts program at UCLA.
