VOCALISTS: José Luis Íñiguez, Anysa Saleh, Irina Contreras, Daniel Bouthot, and Marissa Bergman
Untrained vocalists sing along with pure sine waves.
Named after canopies once built above the pulpit in Catholic churches to amplify the voice of a priest, ABAT-VOIX plays with the relationship of the human voice in all its imperfection, to the coldness of a pure sine wave. The work was played live every day at noon for four days within ‘The Cube’ at Old Market Square, Winnipeg Canada as part of Send + Receive Festival of Sound.
Like so many city center public squares ‘the Cube’ is fraught with tensions over access and gentrification - located in a constantly changing and developed neighborhood. Formerly home to a theater in the round style stage built in 1990, the structure was torn down in 2010 and re birthed as a contained metal box, covered with a curtain of interlocking flexible squares and only opened for special events.
