The first year of the Barbuda Blue Halo Initiative (http://bit.ly/BHI-www) was incredible -- a highly-collaborative, community-driven, comprehensive re-visioning of how to use the ocean without using it up. The Waitt Institute provided people of Barbuda with a toolkit that enabled them to design culturally-appropriate, sustainable policies grounded in science. Tools included socioeconomic interviews, ecological assessment, habitat mapping, zoning analysis, legal analysis, training to build local capacity, communications, and education. New coastal fisheries and zoning regulations have now been signed into law! More on the Initiative and the new laws available on barbuda.waittinstitute.org. Stay tuned for phase two: implementation, enforcement, and monitoring that leads to a healthier coastal ocean and economy.
