A Sound Design Experiment at Umeå Institute of Design in Sweden. How do we get pedestrians to be aware of cyclists, especially in a culture where it’s rude to ring? Our product makes a sound that’s immediately noticeable to pedestrians as a bicycle, but is much more subtle than an intentional “ring”. It detects people and turns on automatically, varying its volume and pitch with distance.
During this three week course we designed the product, built a rapid prototype powered by an Arduino, and tested it in the streets of Umeå.
