For the last two years, I have been working on a series of photographic images that are set-up like long filmstrips. While working on these pieces I decided to experiment by adding video to the still images. Time of Useful Consciousness is defined as the amount of time an individual is able to perform flying duties efficiently in an environment of inadequate oxygen supply. It is the period of time from the interruption of oxygen supply to the time when useful function is lost. Time of Useful Consciousness, combines 2 videos, a stop motion animation and 3 still images. Using a Kinect, the viewer is able to control and interact with the piece without a controller. In this piece, a gesture by a viewer looking at the stairs in the middle of the piece will start the audio in the video of the travelers walking up and down; as the viewer approaches the darkened image at the end, it will trigger an animation of a deer in headlights. This piece was funded in part by a project grant from the City of Santa Monica.
