Car Show Television pointed our newly wrapped Production Truck north this past Friday, March 7th, to the 19th Annual Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance. Little did we know, but we were in for a real treat. This event has grown over the years to legendary status, and is now considered second in the world to the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance held each year in California. We were there from Friday night through Sunday, and we got enough footage for TWO action-packed episodes! For the first of the two episodes, we focused in on the Friday night Hangar Party, and the Saturday "Cars & Coffee" event on the Concours field, part of the golf course next to the elegant Ritz-Carlton hotel.
Although officially starting on Thursday, the 6th with some preliminary activities, the three main days followed, starting with the duPont REGISTRY LIVE event on Friday night at the Fernandina Airport, for another terrific hangar party. Our friend Tom duPont was there, presiding over the festivities, and being a gracious host. Fine food and drink were there for the taking, surrounded by spectacular cars, jets, and luxury lifestyle purveyors. This chilly evening even brought out another one of our friends, Wayne Carini, the host of Chasing Classic Cars, and we had a great time chatting with him, as usual. With acrobatic bartenders, serving champagne upside down from a ring suspended from the ceiling, the duPont models there to meet and greet, and several friends of ours who stopped in to say 'hello', we truly had a great time, and got some very good footage.
The next day, Saturday morning, we attended the "Cars & Coffee" event, and open-to-the-public and free event, which gave many people an opportunity to show the cars that were not part of the official proceedings for the Concours on Sunday. We saw some really cool rides- a custom Olds, a '29 Ford authentic hot rod, and many, many more... We also got to watch a part of the proceedings of an RM Auction, which was a real treat to behold. With the staging area on the back lawn of the Ritz, with a stunning view of the ocean, you could clearly tell by looking at the exquisite cars out there that this would be one of the top auctions for the year in the whole world.... We also got in a brief interview with the newly named Vice Chairman of the Amelia Island Concours, our new friend Mark Becker.
Part of the festivities on Saturday also included a strong showing of luxury automobile manufacturers, like BMW, Porsche, Lamborghini, Ferrari, and McClaren setting up a "test drive" day at the entrance of the Ritz-Carlton. Perhaps the highlight of the day came from Andrew's test drive of a brand new McClaren MP4-12C, a 616hp monster of a car, that is absolutely beautifully designed. With GoPros mounted strategically throughout the car, we will give you a front-row seat to a SuperCar test drive. The look on Andrew's face as he "punched it" the first time was priceless-- so you won't want to miss this one! As the sun began to set, we began our retreat across the Concours field to the Production Truck in the Media Parking area. The "Cars & Coffee" cars were long gone, and they began setting out the Concours cars for the big day on Sunday. It was VERY hard to rip ourselves away from what we saw being placed on the field- something the likes of which we have NEVER seen before!
We want to send out a very special thanks to the Holiday Inn Express- Blount Island for the accommodations during our time up there, and to Michel Azar of Baxter's Steak House for the delightful meal on Amelia Island on Saturday night. Car Show Television proudly recommends both of these places for any stay on or near Amelia Island!!!
