The Washington County Attorney’s Office is one of the first in the state to implement this new approach. Their program is a pre-trial or diversion program. It begins with careful screening to determine eligibility. Prosecutors, defense attorneys, victims, probation officers, mental health workers and the VA asses the veterans who have come into the court system. The program is designed to protect public safety while addressing the issues that lead Vets to become involved in the criminal justice system, getting these veterans help and keeping their “records clean” important in getting a job and avoiding the sanctions that affect convicted felons who are even denied the the right to vote.
