We were in Hamburg to perform at a House Concert. Before the concert, we were having lunch with a friend when I received a text from my Mom... "Call home; it's DeAnn". My heart felt heavy as I dialed my Mom not knowing what to expect. The next words would be... "DeAnn has breast cancer". I dropped the phone and felt like my heavy heart was now bleeding.
That was August 2012. DeAnn and her family have battled through so much since the diagnosis.
Of course, I have always admired and loved my sister, and I have always known her strength and will. But somehow, everyday she amazes me even more...
I wrote this song after visiting my sister in San Francisco. We were going to ask for prayers from the cloistered nuns at a peacefully beautiful convent in the city. Caya, my niece, had school that day, so she couldn't attend our excursion. Through tears, she decided to write her very own letter to the nuns. It read, "Pray like a butterfly for my mommy".
I guess my niece is not only the inspiration behind this song, but she's also the co-writer (smiles).
All of the images are from my sister's journal which you can read at
It's an insightful work of art.
Thankfully, DeAnn is doing well and she and her family are planning on moving back to Texas. AMEN!
