The story of Akjol Ajibekov, a dedicated boxing trainer who struggles through disastrous working conditions following a dream to bring up a boxing world champion in Kyrgyzstan.
Akjol Ajibekov is the trainer of Kyrgyzstan's national boxing team. Some may say he is quite young to be a trainer. But if you watch him work, you will see an old school athlete. He has seen it all: Soviet boxing traditions, reckless 1990s, and capricious 2000s, which have made it clear that nowadays sports in Kyrgyzstan can rely on devoted enthusiasts only, but not the state.
"The way our [boxing] gym looks is an honest reflection of our whole country", says Akjol jokingly staring at the punching bags wrapped in duct tape and old wooden floors that haven't been changed for at least 40 years.
"When I open my own gym, I will purchase these floorboards. They have absorbed sweat of [Kyrgyz boxing legends] Orzubek Nazarov and Andrei Kurnyavka", he says laughingly.
