Originally a piano duo, this piece was written at the request of my friend Cristian Niculescu in conjunction with a stay in Berlin in April–May 2013. “The Chickens of Mequon” also honors Mari and Robert Schmidt, the parents of my former student and close friend Josh Schmidt. The Schmidts own and operate a small farm in Mequon, Wisconsin, raising exquisite poultry.
Jean-Philippe Rameau’s well-known harpsichord piece “La Poule” was the inspiration for the piece. Cristian Niculescu and Victor Nicoara premiered the music on May 22, 2013 at a “Soirée Yehuda Yannay” event in Berlin-Kreutzberg. My friend and fan, Stas Venglevski, gave the score an additional life in this new version premiered in March, 2014 in Milwaukee.
Dana Mc Cormick is at the piano. Rubber chicken were purchased in Berlin.
