'Ballet? What's That?'
Whilst this may be obvious to many people, to others it is not an art form they have the opportunity to engage with on any level. Birmingham Royal Ballet wanted to rectify this by organising a series of outreach events in various locations around the city where they could bring ballet to the community.
Local residents in Handsworth, Perry Beeches and Hamstead got the rare opportunity to see Birmingham Royal Ballet performers up close. They also had the chance to chat to company staff and find out about costumes, dancers' training and what it takes to put a performance together.
The objective of this project was to spark the interest of the local residents, show them that ballet is more accessible than they think, and to persuade them to see a performance for themselves. Judging by the reactions of some of the events' visitors, it seems the project was a great success.
