Wizard of Print – Letterpress
This is a short piece for our client The Folio Society about one-of-a-kind gentleman called Stan Lane. Stan single handedly runs one of the UK’s last fully operational LetterPress print studios. He melts lead ingots to cast the type, he hand typesets Shakespeare special edition books for the Folio Society. Stan's story is bitter sweet, on one hand he continues to work every aspect of the original hot metal print process by Monotype called LetterPress, on the other hand Stan is advancing in years and currently has not qualified successor to his work – so when Stan eventually has to retire will anyone replace him? Our fear is no. We proudly bring you Stand Lane, last of the print wizards.
TIZA Video, a Surrey based Video agency, were lucky enough to be allowed in to video Stan Lane while he worked his magic. We set about videoing Stan with our Canon C100 to tell the story of The Art of Letterpress. We interviewed Stan who told us the process he uses to create the final printed piece and how Letterpress printed books mean to him and make him feel. We could have listened to Stan over and over as he was so interesting and watching him work the Letterpress was truly fantastic for us.
