In 2009, I began working with a number of musical conductors located in and around New York City. At the core of my ongoing research is how these performers train themselves to focus on an awareness of movement and let go of habitual and repetitive patterns of behavior.
For these studies, I asked three conductors to perform one score (or excerpt) alone in an empty room. Using only their head and facial expressions, the videos invite viewers into a space for listening through gestures and the sounds of each performer. Diane, Patrick, and Cesare are different performers, but all three embody the need for as well as the psychological difficulty of producing an artistic gesture.
