There are underlying similarities to food addiction, emotional eating, with bulimia, and anorexia and food addiction and obesity. They have been linked to similar causes and are truly different ends of the same spectrum of control.
Phases of food addiction, dieting, emotional eating:
Phase 1: An obsession with food begins. You plan trips around your food, you plan out all your meals. There seems to be an inordinate amount of time seeking food. Food addicts see life in the relationship to the next time to eat. Holidays, movies, going out. Everything is food centered.
Phase 2: Attempts to Control: This is the diet roller coaster and/or exercise like a maniac stage. In this stage it becomes about controlling your food intake. Most try every diet in the world and become chronic dieters and punish themselves with exercise. This is when irritability and depression set in and you feel like nothing works.
Phase 3: Realization that the control is not working and failure becomes predominate. Feelings of worthlessness because of loss of control, use food to numb, start to recluse and hide from family and friends. Fear of giving up your favorite foods or that being healthy is boring and restrictive.
