WASHINGTON—The White House is looking for young chefs throughout the country to apply for a spot at the third annual Kid’s State Dinner.

The Epicurious Healthy Lunchtime Challenge is open to junior chefs between the ages of eight and 12. Kids must whip up a recipe that’s affordable, original and follows the USDA’s MyPlate guidelines.

The president’s chef gave some tips for young chefs. He recommends a balanced meal with fruit, lean protein and vegetables.

He also points out another key factor to help win over the judges.

"It has to taste good because myself and a number of other people have to judge them so if it doesn't taste good you're not going to make it,” said Sam Kass, the President Obama's chef.

The challenge is also part of First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! initiative.

Recipes can be submitted online until April 5, 2014.

Winners will be notified in June.
