I'm thinking there is going to be a sweet spot with a greater expo and a higher climb rate while in this variable altitude hold mode. A greater expo should give a larger sweet spot to know when you're at 50% throttle and holding altitude.

With a higher climb rate, that sweet spot in the middle won't feel quite as mushy as it does with default settings. When flying LOS its easier to see small movements vertically with the quad, flying FPV its harder to tell slight climbs and falls I've found.
