In Malaysia, many mothers start off with the intention to giving their babies the best start in life by breastfeeding as reflected by the high timely initiation rate of breastfeeding at birth at 63.7 %*. However, once the mothers go home, without adequate support, the exclusive breastfeeding rates of breastfeeding for 6 months (as recommended by the World Health Organisation and UNICEF) reduce drastically to 14.5%*. Mothers without adequate information, knowledge and support for breastfeeding then turn to formula milk which is aggressively marketed and promoted. The Mother to Mother Peer Support (MMPS) group in Penang, Malaysia was initiated by Dr Balkees Abdul Majeed, a local paediatrician and an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) and the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA) to provide mothers access to trained peer counsellors, evidence-based information on breastfeeding and an important avenue for mothers to connect with and support each other in their journey to provide the best for their children.
