As you now turn to the future, let’s embark on our first exercise, A personal SWOT analysis.
SWOT is another commonly used strategic analysis tool. And like the PEST you undertook earlier, this version is for your personal analysis.
In this exercise, we’re going to examine what you are good at. Your strengths, your talents and skills.
Then we’ll take a hard look at your real weaknesses. Areas where you lack the knowledge or skills.
After this, we’ll take a look at the real opportunities you have ahead of you.
And finally, what are the threats to you achieving your success. You may well find some genuine external threats to your future success, but by now, I think you’ll appreciate, most of the threats by this point are internal. You may be your own worst enemy.
Right now, we’re going to examine these as objectively as possible. It will help you here to work through the exercise and then go through this with your buddy.
I often find that people don’t realise their own strengths and over-emphasise their weaknesses. It’s even possible that you don’t know what your talents are – in part because no-one ever told you that this was so. Well, let me assure you… I know that you have talents. They may not seem to be appropriate for what you want to do now, but you can leverage them.
What sets you apart from others?
Your GAPPS report will have identified your leadership strengths and you should include these here.
Think also about your other strengths, all of your experience, education, hobbies as well.
What are you really good at?
What do other people ask you to do for them?
What have you done that makes you really proud
What connections do you have access to that others do not have?
What skills do others recognize in you?
Do ask your family, friends and colleagues for honest and candid feedback here. If they suggest something is weak, when you believed it a strength, thank them for their honesty and put it in the next column. (yes, maybe they are wrong, but it is what others perceive and see that is often more real than our reflection – think of photos of you.)
