Watch this amazing East LA street singer, Jose Gonzales! This was one of the many priceless moments during our HUMELA (Humans of East LA) photo/ story workshop a couple weeks back. My students decided to photograph and interview him singing to the crowd at Tacos Baja Ensenada on Whittier Boulevard. …. This is only one of many exquisitely filmed videos made that day by the incredibly talented HUMELA mentor, Michael Dooley. Merci, Michael! … my student's interview with him: "Jose Gonzales worked as a panadero (baker) for 35 years. He retired from that job due to health issues, and now makes a living singing on the streets and at restaurants in East LA. Mr. Gonzales told us that his happiest moments are always when he's singing. Some days he doesn't make much money but his profession brings him joy. He has written two songs, one called " El Mercadito" which he performed for us. He is a great example of perseverance. Many would have given up in his situation because the pay of being a street singer is often low but he just continues to use his gift to make a living and to find joy in every day."
