Michell and Nicholas both have Leber's Hereditary Optic Neuropathy (LHON). They received transplants of non-embryonic umbilical cord blood stem cells to treat the condition with the hopes of stopping the progression of the degeneration and improve their vision.
Transplants injections were delivered via spinal and IV.
LHON is genetic disorder passed through mitochondria. The retinal ganglion cells of people with LHON degenerate leading to a loss of vision. The degeneration can begin in childhood but it might also begin much later in life. First one eye and then the other begins to lose sight.
Michell and Nicholas received transplants of umbilical cord blood stem cells delivered at a hospital in Qingdao, China.
