This is a piece from my ongoing lifelong journey of working with the children in Kashmir, one of the world's most dangerous conflict zones situated on India-Pakistan border.
Children had been orphaned in the violence. Someone had to do something. We had to make a start somewhere. In searching desperately for an opportunity to help the children, I found the founders of Borderless World Organization. They had made a courageous start of an endeavor that they knew will outlast their life.
When I started volunteering for BWF, I was desperate to help the children experience the freedom of unrestrained creation. It was breaking my heart to see the children living in gloom and unable to express. The only thing that I had at my disposal was a camera. I put the cameras in the hands of these girls and the magic exploded!
I shot this video on Sony Z1; given to me by a friend with a heart of gold. Another one put his heart into editing it. Yet another one gave voice to it. Someone sent money from the US. People just emerged from everywhere and we saw this film through. The only thing I am embarrassed about is that I could not avoid featuring myself in it. With great hesitation and upon insistence of friends I had to accept that the story won't be complete without it.
The journey has continued with vigor and cheer. Sequel is on its way this year with stunning works of art from the children. And there is something very exciting in making!
So here's part one!
