A brief view into two for-profit social enterprises in the Acceleration Portfolio, implemented in collaboration with Marico Innovation Foundation: Safe Harvest Private Limited is a pesticide free staple food brand sourcing safe, healthy products from small marginal farmer cooperatives across India. Because Safe Harvest products are neither organic (expensive) nor commodity (price conscious buyers), creating an appropriate market niche for themselves and changing behaviour around buying and eating affordable, safe food, is Safe Harvest’s greatest challenge. Through their engagement with Innovation Alchemy, Safe Harvest is working to increase their revenue from Non-Pesticide Managed (NPM) food produce from a topline of 1 Crore in 2013-2014 to 27 Crore in 2015-2016 through strategically building both retail and distribution channels as well as partnerships with farmer cooperatives across India.
Eram Scientific Solutions is an R&D focused social enterprise working in the public sanitation sector in India. With the design of their innovative electronic public toilet (eToilet), Eram is working to provide a viable alternative to the current pay per use public sanitation model in urban India. Eram Scientific’s biggest challenge is identifying appropriate buyers for their eToilet and encouraging adoption by the public, in a sustainable, cost efficient manner. With the gravity of the public sanitation crisis growing with the population, Innovation Alchemy’s engagement with Eram is helping to increase their sales from their initial goal of 400 new toilet installations through government channels and small entrepreneurs to 18,200 eToilets by 2015-2016 targeting a few specific locations, such as highways, petrol bunks, schools, urban parks, tourist spots, and shopping centers, with private corporate buyers and CSR funding as the focus of these efforts.
