Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a prevalent and widely misunderstood neurodevelopmental disorder. Often when the word 'autism' is heard, many people believe and reinforce the common misconception that autism consists of a limited and narrow variety of traits. In truth, autism encompasses an incredibly diverse range of individuals, and many more Western students are affected by autism than we may realize. Whether it be that someone close to them is affected by autism, or they themselves have autism, many individuals experience its impact on a daily basis. Over the last two years of our club's presence on campus, it has become evident that there is a significant population of our student body that is not properly educated on this condition. The goal of our awareness week is to advocate for those affected by informing our Western community about the truths of autism, and improve overall awareness to yield greater support on campus.
In celebration of World Autism Awareness Day, Autism Awareness Western (AAW) will be in the UCC Atrium of Western University on Tuesday, April 1st and Wednesday, April 2nd to hold our annual autism awareness week.
