Lisa Leto hoped for the best but prepared for the worst. It was late January, and she thought she was having a heart attack.
“It felt like an elephant was sitting on my chest. It was like very bad pain concentrated over on the left side,” says Leto.
This Cape Coral mother of four didn’t have to go far or wait long to get answers. Cape Coral Hospital recently opened an eight-bed cardiac center dedicated to chest pain.
“They have well trained cardiologists. They’ve got a diagnostic catheterization lab so they really can provide all the cardiac care that is needed,” says Cindy Brown, VP patient care services with Lee Memorial Health System.
Within a matter of minutes Leto was undergoing a battery of tests, designed to pinpoint the source of her pain.
“They did echocardiograms, they did chest x-rays, they did sonograms, they put me on a heart monitor. You name it, they did it,” says Leto.
Nothing was left to chance. As a chest pain center it follows guidelines that expedite care and improve outcomes.
“Using nationally known, nationally proven, excellent protocols for the care of patients with chest pain, we’re able to do what we used to do in 36 hours and be able to test you, determine what’s going on. And either admit you to the hospital if you truly did have a heart attack or send you home,” says Brown.
Door-to-door in 17 hours, Leto was back home with a diagnosis in hand. The good news was: it was not a heart attack.
“I have stenosis of the esophagus, so that's what it turned out to be,’ says Leto.
At the end of the day, Leto could rest easy, knowing she had a speedy resolution to her chest pain.
