Part of the exhibition PER^FORM | at / within / beyond | BOUNDARY, "Barrier" is an installation whose performance explores the forces of conformity, exclusion, assimilation, and rebellion. A voice is heard recounting a memory of living as a foreigner while a body performs a slow, cumulative task: extracting text from the physical barrier (to the outside) to the floor, from the vertical to the horizontal. Although her body is bent over and her labor is palpable, she chooses when, where and how to inscribe them onto the surface below her. She leaves fragments of words or phrases hovering above her, between her and the viewer, until she is ready to use them.
