Was the tragic loss of flight MH370 due to structural failure and design flaw? At a Saturday 29 March 2014 press conference held by the Consumers Association of Penang, CAP founder and president SM Mohamed Idris, a respected consumer advocate in Malaysia, reads a press release raising this possibility. The statement is followed by visiting scholar CK Raju, a renowned physicist, taking questions from the press. The conference seeks to draw attention to the possibility of structural failure and design flaw as factors in the loss of flight MH370. While this possibility had been briefly raised in the days following the disappearance of the flight, it quickly became overshadowed by many other theories, some bordering on the conspiratorial and preposterous. CAP is not claiming to have solved the mystery of MH370; it is simply urging investigators to consider structural failure and design flaw along with all the other theories currently being put forth. If these crucial but neglected factors are shown to have played a role in the tragedy, it will impact future flight safety and the responsible parties ought to therefore be held accountable.
