I'm particularly amazed by the human body, especially by the one of an extremely dedicated athlete. Body building is a sport unlike any other, it's the dedication that sets this sport apart. Every body is different and so much of body building is a science, figuring out each own's body. For a body builder it is months and years of trial and error, what works and what does not. The training is long and brutal, and nutrition is constant, and what you put in your body will affect you later.
‘Figure’ is a project that takes place over the course of over a year. I blended my fascination for stop motion animation, still photography and a little bit of film to create this quick glimpse into the life of a professional body builder. The athlete is my sister, Laurel. Laurel has always been the alpha athlete growing up, excelling in running, and started seriously weight lifting about 4 years ago. She previously trained as a power lifter, but now focuses on lots of reps and less weight. She has embarked and fully committed to being a professional body builder. I have witnessed her transformation from bulking and building serious muscle, to the diet and shedding of that weight for her competitions. She relies fully on food, natural proteins, some protein supplements and essential oils for her nutrition. She claims, "I eat a lot of spinach, and more steak in my off season". Laurel has participated in weight lifting competitions such as the Bros vs. Pros, where she deadlifted 185 lbs for 60 reps. She is not like many female athletes. This is her story through my lens.
