2014 Concord Rod and Gun Club Fishing Seminar Program
The Pond Committee has sponsored two fishing seminars so far this year, one in February and one in March, both of which drew large audiences form the surrounding communities and as far away as Ports might NH. The February program featured two presentations, on by Dan Harrison a well know fly fishing guide from Western MA titled “Winter Fly Fishing in Western MA” and, club member Glenn Urban, presented a talk called “Salmon On The Fly - Bonaventure & Miramichi Rivers, Canada” .
The March seminars were Presented by Eric Harrison writer of the monthly Kayak Corner column for On The Water magazine and Charlie Shadan, owner of the Evening Sun Fly Shop in Pepperell. Eric’s talk was titled “Kayak Fishing New England” and Charlie’s was called “Spring Fly Fishing The Nissitissit and Squannacook Rivers, Middlesex County MA”.
Eric discussed the great kayak fishing opportunities all over the Northeast. Most anglers don’t recognize what a great fishing platform kayaks are; Eric will demonstrate the effectiveness of the kayak as a fishing tool by walking (or paddling!) through the 2013 fishing season. Kayak fishing tactics for everything from weakfish, carp, and lake trout to large striped bass will be reviewed. For last ten years Eric has been a hardcore kayak fisherman, focusing on Boston Harbor and the North Shore as well as the freshwaters all over New England. Eric is a hardcore striper fisherman and fishes year round from his kayak in Boston. He is well known as a fanatical plastics fisherman and has published several articles about fishing plastic lures. Eric also brought and displayed his kayak and showed us all how it’s rigged for fishing. Eric is active on Facebook. To keep up on his 2014 fishing adventures send him a friend request.
Charlie’s presentation included a video he has created that shows a unique above and below water perspective of both the Nissitissit and Squannacook Rivers. His presentation provided the audience with an effective introduction to fishing these rivers covering accessibility, parking, types of fish, state and volunteer-assisted trout stocking, and some of the more productive holes. In addition, Charlie described effective fly patterns and equipment that will help novices and veterans alike land more fish. Charlie is also a fly fishing guide on New England Rivers.
