The Aesthetics of the Oppressed (Image, Sound, Word) is the theoretical and practical basis of the Theatre of the Oppressed. It is a set of creative activities that aim at dismantling the oppressive system’s castrating strategies of influencing and convincing the oppressed that they are incapable of creating, participating and deciding. The Aesthetics of the Oppressed is a means of fighting against the aesthetic invasion of the brains, against the domination of ideas and perceptions and the authoritarian imposition of pre-established conceptions of the beautiful, the right and the desirable. The Aesthetics of the Oppressed is an exercise of freedom that goes against the passive consumption and stimulates the creative and critical production of culture and knowledge.
This work attempts to stimulate the group members to develop their own aesthetic perception so that the power of the stories told, the force of this dramaturgy inherent in life can have a plastic (and political) representation with which they identify and in which they recognize themselves
SOUND / RHYTHM
This module aims to develop SOUND and RHYTHM in Theatre of the Oppressed scenes and plays. The sound of the voice and the body, the sound of objects and their possible combinations, the rhythm of the created sounds, the rhythm of the characters, the rhythm of the play, the rhythm of the forum and rhythm as dialogue. This experience will promote a collective investigation about the possibilities of rhythmical expression of daily-life oppressions. The starting point is the body as a rhythmical and sound resource, then (recycled) objects and finally the combination of both in order to create sonorous compositions that express concrete contents, or that tell stories. How to associate rhythm, image and movement in a sonorous composition that allows to communicate a story? How could this composition allow forum? How to make forum without words, in interaction with self-produced sounds and rhythms, creating dialogues between image and sound, between sound and word?
This module focuses on the development of the IMAGE (clothing of the characters, “HOT” objects, props, setting, etc..) of the theatrical production. Through the Aesthetics of the Oppressed techniques, developed from found objects (recycled) will be created scenic elements. The use of locally available resources; the search for solutions that simplify the change of the characters’ costumes; the assembling and dismantling of settings and the transition from one scene to another; and the creation of representations that compressing time and space, without unnecessary details and with minimal changes of environment; are fundamental ingredients in working with community groups, which challenging us with limitations of resources, experience and time availability. The more powerful the image that represents a certain reality being, the greater the effectiveness of its communication and encouragement of the spectators’ interventions.
Although words being not the only language capable of communicating a story and we can even dispense it with the purposely to make communication more universal: Word is an essential resource. Practitioners and members of popular groups of Theatre of the Oppressed should dominate Word, as it is one of the most powerful means of the aesthetics of the oppression. On the one hand, in this module, we intend to develop the Aesthetics of the Oppressed techniques focused on the appropriation of the written word to facilitate the construction of dramatic texts. And on the other, working with Newspaper Theatre to stimulate further political discussion of the issues addressed in theatrical productions.
