„Lepidoptera“ is the scientific term for butterfly. A gliding and effervescently fluttering flying insect, and a symbol of immortality and reincarnation. This short film featuring two stunt kites, shot in spring at Cap Gris Nez and Cap Blanc Nez near Wissant, France. Particularly during the Second World War this area was heavily used as a strategic war zone.
Because of their dynamic and delicate movements the kites don’t seem like artificial entities, but blend into the natural surroundings. The loud sound created by the flapping movement of the sail caused by wind and air currents resembles the engine sound of old war planes, evoking memories of events of the past. The film demonstrates the neutrality of sounds, whose emotional significance is generated only through the context they appear in.
