Toni Catany was born in Llucmajor (Majorca), in 1942. He began his professional career as a reporter, he used many different photographic procedures and techniques to take his photos. He has carried out several exhibitions and he is the author of books such as Naturesmortes (1987), La meva mediterránea (1994), Obscura memoria (1994), Calotips, 1976-1986 (1998) and the monograph Toni Catany (1999). In 2004 he published his retrospective book El artista en su paraíso (Lunwerg Editores), with the images of which, a retrospective exhibition of his works was carried out at the National Art Museum of Catalonia.
Catany has obtained many awards, such as the prize to the best book of the Primavera Fotográfica of Barcelona (Naturesmortes, 1988); the best book at the Rencontres d’Arles (La mevamediterrànea, 1991); and the European Editor Award to the best illustrated book of the Generalitat de Catalunya (Fotografies, 1998). He was awarded with the honour of Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters of France, and in 2001 he received the National Photography Award.
He died in the summer of 2013.
