Henry Jenkins, media studies philosopher, theorized the idea of a converging “black box”. That over time, the variety of technological mediums will converge leaving just one ultimate and all-purpose black box device. In my video I explore the constantly evolving medium. Mediums are not only converging into one super product but are also converging with the content itself. As the design of our technologies evolves it becomes less of a physical object and closer to a window into what’s inside. The touch screen itself highlights this desire to be as close to our content as possible—going so far as to design a medium in which we are touching the screen. This urge to move away from our physical objects and closer to what’s inside also highlights the different process abilities of our technological form versus our physical form. While doing some visual research for my video I kept in mind ideas of social digital voyeurism, information lag, interception, platform crossovers and digital intimacy.
