Tantrums and Tiaras: Battle of the Bar Queens 2014 is back and better than ever! This fun, campy drag pageant took place Sunday, Feb. 16 at 7 pm at the Birch North Park Theatre and benefitted The San Diego LGBT Community Center and its over 40 programs and services.
Started in 2009, this event is a spoof on the Miss America Pageant, with many of the community’s bars sending a contestant from their staff – with little or no drag experience – to compete for the crown. The first Tantrums and Tiaras event was sold out, with community members coming together to see their favorite bar staff compete.
This event was nothing like a “traditional drag show” – instead, it was pageant style and all of the contestants had very little experience. These “non-performing queens” tried their best to strut around the stage in stilettos, trying not to fall over. The show is a full-scale stage production and audience members were wowed by what was in store for them. In its first year, contestants surprised the audience with a live donkey, roller skates and flying effects on stage.
The event was organized in partnership between Mo’s Universe (proprietor of Urban Mo’s, Baja Betty’s, Gossip Grill and Hillcrest Brewing Company) and The Center, an organization which provides direct services to more than 50,000 community members last year. Mo’s Universe is a longtime supporter of The Center, and regularly gives back to the organization.
