A few things I forgot to mention (I only had five minutes of film left on my camera so I was trying to get everything before the camera cut me off!):
(1) wear thick knee socks or leg warmers to protect from bruising
(2) the hoop should be right on top of your foot when doing the second part as you bring your foot up
(3) do this with your eyes closed so that you don't get into the habit of looking down!
Special thanks to myriah (kissedapinkstarr on YouTube) who first encouraged me to use my left foot (rather than my right foot) to pull up my hoop when hooping on one leg, which is how I eventually figured out how to do the kickstart!
