This is a RnD project I have been working on to learn Mantra and test out the new Alembic V-Ray Proxy loader in 3DS Max.
The Houdini simulation needs more work especially the spray layer which needs wind and turbulence adding, didn't have time to fix this.
FLIP - 60 million particles - 12hours for 250frames.
WW - 50 million particle peak.
Average render times:-
V-Ray 3.0 with Alembic Proxy loader + HDR light + Brute Force GI = 30min Average frame time (RAM 11GB peak, didn't proxy water surface)
Mantra with particle Volumes + HDR light + 2 GI bounces = 20min Average frame time (RAM 3.5GB peak, all delayed load)
The WW Alembic export came to a massive 300GB for one file, Yikes! Its meant to be the most efficient way to cache as it only pulls in the data that it needs from the file. Its very fast and it even updates in the 3DSMax viewport using V-Ray 3.0 Proxy loader. :)
