I made this film for my elementary school's 100th Birthday Gala at the Four Seasons in St. Louis. I've always said that if I could relive Nursery through 6th Grade at Community, I would. And get this, I wouldn't change a thing. When I visited the school last January to film my new friends and former teachers, it's like I finally got that gift of time travel. I walked in the little building and smelled that magical mix of milk and graham crackers and glue. I sat criss cross apple sauce while the JKers row row rowed the boat with our teacher just like I had row row rowed the boat 18 years ago. I went in the woods and remembered what it was like to be able to make believe on a crisp afternoon with leaves and sticks under your feet and the warmth of a classroom not too far away.
Even with the physical changes since my time there, there's something eternal about Community; something that lives on decade after decade and I think I'm realizing what it is. It's a love. And until the next great Community Student invents a time machine and takes us back to the place that raised us, this film is my attempt to capture that love and share it with you.
