This clip is unexpected and significant to the progress of Crafted to Last - Minnesota Beer Blossoms. I went to Harriet Brewing Company on March 16, 2014 to get a few shots of Zack Lozier on stage in the tap room because he had recently agreed to compose an original score for the film and he had been playing this venue from the earliest days of the brewery.
Our previous collaboration with Zack was indirect. When Jesse Brodd suggested that CDDF Productions consider making a short video for the 1st year anniversary of the tap room soft opening I knew that I had plenty of source video but lacked musical content, so I asked Jesse to help. Since opening in March 2012 the Harriet Tap Room had become well-known as an important venue for live music. Jesse had a lot of musicians to choose from. He sent me a copy of Fallout by Big Blue Station Wagon featuring Zack. The result was "3 Minute Tap Room".
In 2014, the Zack Lozier Three was going to play the Harriet Tap Room during the 2nd anniversary celebration. I thought it would be pretty cool to record the video of Zack I needed for the film and its promotion was recorded on the second anniversary of CDDF Production shooting video at celebration for the tap room. I like it when things line up that way.
I got to the gig early so that Zack and I could chat about the score and the film. I was thrilled to hear that a couple pieces from the score were on the set list for that night and that Steven Hobert and Steve Pikal were planning to go to the studio after the show and lay down tracks for the film. I let the camera run, so that I could listen to the music later and hear where Zack was headed with the score. I figured that the crowd and brewery noise would be so prevalent that the track would not be suitable for use in a video, but I was wrong. Pleasantly wrong.
The result is Right Before It Began. A variation on the current version of the film, CTL#10e, and an original piece from the score recorded live in the Harriet Brewing Tap Room featuring Steven Hobert (keys), Steve Pikal (bass) and Zack Lozier (trumpet). Watch the clip until the end because it features a studio version of another piece from the score during the credits.
The title reflects the introduction for the clip because the Indiegogo Campaign that Zack talks about will be launching very soon. We aim to raise the funds to pay Zack for the score and music direction, contract with more Minnesota musicians to enhance the as yet unreleased Bonus Material from Crafted to Last, and get live music at the opening night events that CDDF is planning for the Summer of 2014.
