The tsunami and earthquake that struck the Indian Ocean basin on 26 December 2004 was one of the worst disasters in recent memory, killing more than 225,000 people in 11 countries. ADB responded to the crisis by launching the largest grant program in its history. The Earthquake and Tsunami Emergency Support Project aimed to support rehabilitation, reconstruction, and disaster management by (i) alleviating constraints resulting from the lack of public goods and facilities, (ii) restoring essential public services, and (iii) rebuilding infrastructure.
