Twelve Step programs offer the clinician a valuable adjunct to professional care. They can be combined with ongoing psychosocial treatment as well as psychopharmacology. This session will provide information on the availability of both Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous and will describe the relative utility of each in terms of drug use patterns of the referred patient. Techniques for dealing with effective referral, including addressing patients’ reservations about such programs, will be discussed.

The way in which these programs operate so as to promote abstinence will be reviewed along with a description of long-term, abstinent members who often serve as sponsors. Issues of patients who are on agents such as SSRI’s, neuroleptics, or opioid maintenance (such as buprenorphine/naloxone) will be discussed relative to compatibility with participation in these programs. Additionally, reported outcome data will be reviewed.
