The following animation shows the construction of large reservoirs from 1880 to 2005 by year
It is derived from the Global Reservoir and Dam (GRanD) database, (see credits for additional information). Symbol sizes represent the storage capacity of each reservoir. Data may not be complete for the most recent years.
This animation is based on the Global Reservoir and Dam (GRanD) database, Version 1.1, containing 6,862 records of the world’s largest reservoirs and their associated dams with a cumulative storage capacity of 6,197 km3. The dams were geospatially referenced and have multiple attributes, such as name, height, area and volume of reservoir, primary use, and year of construction.
