The inspiration for my work comes from my background and a recent trip through Russia, particularly sailing down the Volga River, cemented ideas that were evolving.
I make no excuses for my textile pieces. They are highly decorative, without hidden meanings. I have tried to combine several elements such as architectural features, imagery found on the iconostasis and the sense of lavishness of church services, in particular the vestments worn by the clergy. These are usually adorned with miniature icons and precious stones. The robes are made of expensive fine textiles; silk, brocade and velvet often heavily embroidered.
My aim is to produce a sense of this by creating rich surface textures where layer upon layer of fabrics, printed material, beading, machine and hand embroidery all contribute to a crusted, bejeweled, shimmering surface. I want to reflect Russian and Ukrainian cultures through my work.
