River Teesta has dried up due to drastic fall of its water level . Withdrawal of Teesta waters by India continues to play havoc with the lives of the people in northern Bangladesh's , A Channel i news by Sanjoy Chaki from Teesta basin of northern Bangladesh.
Down part of Teesta is a dead river now. this part dried up due to off all the switch gates of Teesta barrage at dalia point. The water can’t flow rest of of the river area.
Abdul Alim, resident of Teesta basin is going to bath in Teesta with a jug because of water shortage. He said, bathing is impossible in the river without a jug. I can’t sink in the river water, he added.
Other resident kalam ali said, he leave up bathing in the river water due to dry up, now he used tube well water for these purpose.The down-stream of river Teesta has been dried up due to shut-down of all 52 gates of Teesta irrigation project’s Barrage. Water doesn’t flow to the Chaars of mighty Teesta regularly.
Adul Alim, lived by the bank of river Teesta, going to take his bath in river. But he is caring a jug with him due to water shortage.
He said, without jug you can’t take your bath here in this river. Due to less water, I even can not fully get into the water.
One of other residence Kalam Ali said, I use tubewell water instead of going to the river, because it’s dried up.
Nazor Ali, a riverine farmer has been cultivating their crops for many years by using Teesta water. They use it for their regular irrigation.
But he failed to corn production in this year due to water shortage at the field Parulia of Lalmonirhat district. He complained, i was try to protect this corn field by the irrigation pump but ground water is not available there also. He has to disconnect the irrigation pump due to ground water crisis. Nazor Ali think he will lose half of investment.
Onion farmer Abdul Khalek lost his invest money. His onion are not grow up due to lack of ground water supply.
