It was a little over three years ago that I made my first EP. It was called Until it Lands. I wrote those songs in a quiet space between the shelves in a library of a church near my house. Coming home from work at the coffeeshop down the street, I'd take my old Martin and head to the church. Jose let me in with his ring of keys that jangled at his hip - and later on I discovered that Jose did the same thing for a couple of homeless guys that walked the paths down Little Mexico to the lagoon and the beach and then back to the church when the sun went down. Jose did what church is supposed to, meet the need, he did it in secret and I will always remember him for it.
That library was dark and dusty, it smelled like the inside of the Hardy Boys books I read as a kid - the sort of place you go to sort through the archives of young trouble. I went there to be alone - to wonder aloud about what I was doing (in a broader, metaphysical sense) and what kind of person I was becoming, so when my mother called me with news of her cancer diagnosis, I found myself back there again and again, struggling through the grand misunderstanding of life the way she had taught me: between the pages of books.
She fought the cancer for three years - enough time for me to record one more EP, which was named after the flyfishing film I soundtracked with two songs from the album. It had only been released for one month when she called me home. She passed away on the day after her 59th birthday.
The library had been torn down, in the years between, so this time I went for a walk to deal with it all. On November 4th I walked out the front door of my house in San Diego and didn't stop until I reached the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, almost 600 miles North. As I walked, I wrote songs and I pictured them vividly - because, as I learned, when the mind slows and grows vacant it fills itself with stories and landscape. I wrote the songs down, and the stories. The stories filled an entire book, each one representing a song.
This Kickstarter campaign is designed to fund the physical production of two things that were created before, during and after my 40 day walk up the Coast of California State. A full length album, and a collection of short stories to match them.
