Minnetonka's Elementary Language Arts Committee is updating materials in writing, reading and student texts based on best practice research, test data, parent survey data and MN standards. Teachers currently use the 6 + 1 traits of writing language and a variety of their own materials and approaches to teach writing in their classrooms across the district. The Being a Writer curriculum from Developmental Studies will meet the exemplary criteria set by the committee. These materials allow for integration of 6 Traits language and will provide teachers with the tools to deliver quality daily writing instruction for all students across all elementary programs in Minnetonka. More than 45 teachers have piloted the curriculum materials this school year and there is new enthusiasm for writing from their students. In Minnetonka, our goal is to create student writers who write for enjoyment and purpose and who have a foundation of English grammar skills to proficiently communicate ideas through writing.
