Interviews, rehearsals, and excerpts of performances reveal the talent and innovation of composers from Sumatra, Java, and Bali. Rizaldi Siagan creates works that give older instruments a new life. Nyoman Windha is influenced by music from all over Indonesian, as well as other parts of the world. Suwardi composes by inventing new instruments and using the resulting sounds. Pande Made Sukerta teaches his students to be open to all kinds of unusual sounds, whether made with their own bodies or just a few gongs.
The video tapes were recorded in Indonesia by Jody Diamond, during a year-long survey of new music for traditional instruments; the project included over 60 composers.
