On November 4, 2013, Melissa lost her 19-year-old daughter, Kali, to a heroin overdose.
Kali was raised in a middle-class family in Syracuse, N.Y. She was a painter, and on the honor roll in high school.
Kali is not an anomaly. Heroin is infiltrating the homes of suburban families all across Central New York. Methadone clinics have year long waiting lists, and overdoses have skyrocketed.
The Sickness, a feature film by Chris Janjic and Andrew Renneisen, tells the stories of those most affected by the heroin epidemic. The film gives voice to the user who sees no way out, to the parents who have given everything to help their son, and to the mother whose daughter was robbed of her life.
