Despite assurances that some of the redwoods behind Soda Hall were going to be left, as per input from the greater Berkeley community, the entire grove of trees was cutdown and stumps were ground. There is not a single standing redwood tree in the lot. Police were sent to stop any protest against the removal of the trees. This project is part of the 2020 Long Range Development Plan, which will involved the removal of redwood, oak and buckeye groves all over campus over the next 6 years, replacing open space with privatized tech research labs. The lot behind Soda Hall will have a $20million tech design institute, paid for by the executive director of Qualcomm in exchange for exclusive patent use rights from university research at this new facility.
