AEPDX, and Adobe After Effects user group here in Portland invited me to join 10 teams to compete in an illustrated animation event. Each team was made up of one illustrator and one motion designer and were tasked to create a video around the word "Float". We were given one week to create something and then we all attended a premier party where the audience voted for their favorite. It was a great experience and I was honored to be involved. I only did the illustration part of this video. All of the animation was done by the very talented Jed Bursiek - another motion designer here in Portland. The process behind the creation was a little backwards, as Jed and I didn't really have a story at first. I knew I wanted to set a few parameters around a moody piece such as keeping it dark, black and white (with just a single highlight color) and trying to set up a feeling of mystery. I just came up with some images that I thought were interesting and then we naturally moved them around until it felt like a coherent sequence. Then I just filled in the blanks of the story with a few more frames and then Jed went to work.
